Everyone knows a couple like Jack and Grace: he has looks and wealth, she has charm and elegance. You'd like to get to know Grace better. But it's difficult, because you realize Jack and Grace are never apart. Some might call this true love.

Picture this: a dinner party at their perfect home, the conversation and wine flowing. They appear to be in their element while entertaining. And Grace's friends are eager to reciprocate with lunch the following week. Grace wants to go, but knows she never will. Her friends call - so why doesn't Grace ever answer the phone? And how can she cook such elaborate meals but remain so slim?

And why are there bars on one of the bedroom windows?

The perfect marriage? Or the perfect lie? (Goodreads)

My Review:

They say that you can never really know what goes on behind closed doors, and this story is an excellent example!

Jack and Grace seem like the perfect couple. He's smooth and charming and she seems like the perfect hostess. But who really knows what goes on in someone else's marriage?

You never truly know who a person is until you've lived with them behind closed doors

The story opens with Jack and Grace hosting a dinner party for their friends. Grace seems nervous, but isn't that usual when you're hosting a party and want everything to run smoothly? Still, something seems off.

Alternating between present day and past, the story slowly unfolds to show that their marriage is anything but perfect. The author has a masterful touch as the timelines unfold seamlessly between past and present, slowly revealing the truth of Jack and Grace's relationship.

The more we learn about the relationship, the more invested we become in what happens next! The story was fast paced but slow at the same time, if that makes sense. Plus I kept going back to reread certain sections to confirm that yes, that really did happen.

All of the characters are excellent but I really loved Grace's sister, Millie. Even though Grace did her best to protect and shelter Millie, Millie was smarter than people assumed and held her own.

While there were times that I didn't care for Grace or some of the decisions she made, everything was believable. That made things that much more terrifying! If a strong, smart woman like Grace can have her life go down such an unexpected path, it could happen to almost anyone.

And the ending! What an ending! I had to go back and reread the last few chapters because it was so good.

This is one of those stories where you more or less know what's going to happen, but the ride itself is so worth it! Definitely a recommended read!

  2. I loved this one also. And I too thought the ending was amazing but I don't think you would have known actually. Millie was fabulous as a character. One of my favourite books for the year for sure.
