Turn Offs & Turn Ons - What do you look for before following a new blog?

lolcats networking
Recently I found a link-up of new to me blogs, so I checked them out to see if I wanted to follow any. Since there were over 90 blogs, I had to make quick decisions on whether or not to add them to my Bloglovin' feed. I found myself a little harsh with my quicksnap judgements, but better I don't follow now than have to unfollow later.

No new posts within the past few months? Next!

Not in English? That one's easy because I can only read English, so next!

Flashing or sparkly background? Hard to read color scheme? Next!

Auto-play music? People still do that? Next!

Confusing or cluttered layout so I can't tell where your most recent posts are?  Next!

Nothing but cover reveals or book blasts? I want at least some original material, so next!

All condensed posts so I have to hit "Read more" to see what they're about? And some of the ones I found only had part of a giant picture and no post! Stop making me work so hard! I can understand condensing older posts, but maybe have the latest one fully fleshed out? Next!

Odd post titles so I have no clue what they're about? Again, stop making me work so hard. Next!

Nothing on your site but a genre I don't read? No offense, but not gonna follow.

Have a review on one of my favorite authors? Automatic follow and I love you!

Pop-up ads that won't stop popping up? Why do you want to annoy your readers that way? Next!

Giant headers or post images that take up half the page are annoying, but not a deal-breaker if your content is good. Giant font, on the other hand, IS! File this one under Terri's Odd Quirks.

Oddly enough, the Adult Blog warning didn't deter me. I follow a few so-called "adult" blogs that are well written with wide ranging tastes, so didn't want to miss out on a hidden gem.

Out of the 90+ blogs I checked, I wound up following only six. Was I too harsh or quick to judge? What are some of your automatic follow/don't follow requirements?

  1. "Auto-play music? People still do that? Next!" LOL, thankfully this one is not a common thing anymore, but I completely agree, it's a deal breaker for me.

Giant font (and too small font) are deal breakers for me too.

The read more doesn't bother me too much (I use it now in my reviews so that there isn't so much scrolling because those are lengthier posts.) so long as I have enough information to see what the post is about, but that's because I usually read posts in Feedly.

What does bother me about read more is when people do it for RSS posts and you have to click to go to their blog to read the post. That is one of my pet peeves and I won't follow people that do that!

    1. I never minded the music until I got into the habit of opening several tabs at once. I play my own music, so trying to track down that one blog to turn it off drove me nuts! Thankfully, not many bloggers do that anymore!

I can see how giant or too tiny font would be a deal breaker too. Good point!

I don't really mind the Read More posts if I have some idea of what the post is about, but I came across a few where it was a total guessing game. Give me something to work with so I know if I want to read more or not! Why do so many bloggers want to make me work so hard? ha!

  2. LOL I have most of those as my criteria as well. But I do the condensed post. Sorry! I prefer that on blogs. I end up skipping the ones that don't have the read-more because you end up scrolling and scrolling for half an hour to see like 6 posts. Drives me nutty.

The pop ups and music are really off putting. Totally agree on that.

    1. Oops....think I'm guilty of long posts! Sorry!

I don't mind the condensed posts too much so long as I have some idea of what the post is about. The ones that drive me nuts are the ones with only a post title and picture. How do I know if I want to read more if I have no idea what the post is about?

    2. LOL I use Bloglovin so it's not an issue for me at all once I follow a blog but when checking them out it does make it harder for me so if in the first like 3 posts I don't see something catching I move on.

Ah just a pic and title would be difficult especially when they have those vague titles you were talking about. I have one I follow that does that. I tend to skip her posts too. Huh!

  3. I don't like the animated cursors and plug ins that really slow down the loading of the page. That is probably my biggest deterrent. Takes me 5 minutes to access your blog? No, thank you.

Your blog, by the way, I can get right into.

I also don't like overly busy blogs. I see lots of buttons for blog hops, challenges, team this and team that. Sometimes there is so much stuff, it is hard to find the follow me buttons or the comment buttons. If I can't find what I'm looking for rather quickly, I don't have time to navigate the blog.

And then what you said above. Great post!

    1. Thanks for the feedback on my blog loading okay for you! Sometimes it loads slow for me, so I worry.

Totally agree with you about busy blogs where you can't find anything! I like to look at archives to check out their recent posts, but can't always find one.

Love your blog, as everything is laid out nicely. :)

  4. It's hard to find blogs that you really love, so I don't think you were too quick to judge. A lot of these things would drive me nuts too!

    1. Thank you! I was starting to feel guilty that I might have been too harsh since I only found 6 new blogs out of over 90! But sometimes I guess snap judgements can be good. :)

  5. I have a hard time finding new blogs to follow, I've kinda just gotten my core and I haven't spread out much from there. I think after 5 years there are just too many out there anymore, and I really don't have the time to hunt through them all.

    1. You're right, there are so, so many new blogs out there! I'm tempted to stick with my core group as it's hard work to find new blogs, but at the same time I'd like to find fresh, new voices and maybe learn something new. But I'm basically lazy, so it might take me awhile! lol

  6. I'm with Ryan on this one. I rarely follow new blogs anymore, at least through my reader. I will add new bloggers on Twitter, but I won't subscribe.

When I do find a new blog to follow though in those rare occurrences, so many of your comments ring true. I definitely have to find the posts interesting and something in common with my interests. And, you are right. I would much rather determine earlier rather than later if I should follow. I'm still trying to clean up my reader from a couple of years ago when I followed a bunch of new blogs that were just not right for me.

    1. I'm still working on cleaning up my reader as I followed way too many people when I was starting out. I miss my Google Reader at times like this because it just seemed easier to decide what blogs to unfollow on there.

  7. Excellent post! I agree with everything you said here. Large headers, lots of click through, only chatting about covers, lots of flashy distracting bells and whistles :)

I just want to read about books and book thoughts andfun bookish topics ;)

    1. Absolutely! I just want to read about books and what the blogger thought about them!

  8. Messy layouts and difficult navigation are big ones for me. I don't want to see -everything- one one page.

    1. You're right, some things shouldn't be all on the main page. Difficult navigation is a big one, and usually has me moving on to the next blog!

  9. Nope, not to hard at all. I do a lot of the same things. I don't like the condensed posts, maybe others do, but not me. I also look for genre they post - if not what I read, nope. I do look at what's on the sidebars too, that tells of the reader. Not much there I usually pass. And yes, they don't have to post daily but regular posting is something to look for.

    1. Regular posting is important, but as someone who needs to work on her consistency I tend to be a little more lenient in that area. :)

  10. Intriguing post! I am a content girl so I will look through to see if there is something interesting/relevant to me. If it is hard to read the blog because of fonts, colors, etc. then I am not going to follow either.

    1. The odd color combinations can be a problem for me, as some of them really hurt the eyes!
