Book Review: Stay With Me

Stay With Me - Alexia's Books and Such
Stay With Me by Alison Gaylin

ARC received from publisher in exchange for an honest review

Brenna Spector is held prisoner by the past. She has perfect memory, which allows her to recall in vivid and remarkable detail every moment of every day of her adult life. If only she could remember more from her child-hood...for she's still trying to unravel the mystery of her sister Clea's disappearance 28 years ago when Clea was seventeen.

But now her obsession with finding out what happened to Clea is taking a toll on her own teenage daughter, Maya, who's been very secretive lately. And when Maya goes missing, Brenna fears her worst nightmare has come true. (Goodreads)

My Thoughts:

Brenna is a fascinating character who is blessed (or cursed) with a perfect memory. This is a great asset for a Private Investigator, but not so much for a mother or girlfriend. Can you imagine living with someone who never forgets anything you've ever said or done? How do you win an argument with someone like that?

I always think of Carrie Wells from the Unforgettable TV show while reading this series. Unlike Carrie, Brenna can get lost in her memories and sometimes needs an anchor to keep her in the here and now. Carrie seems to have a little more control over her memory, but this only makes Brenna more sympathetic.

Brenna has been obsessed with her sister's disappearance for most of her life, and it's taking a toll on her relationship with her daughter. When her daughter Maya disappears, Brenna is beside herself. Where did Maya go? Why was she suddenly keeping secrets? Could her disappearance have anything to do with her stepmother's job or was it Brenna's fault? So many questions with no good answers!

I'm really enjoying this series because Brenna is such a great character! The story is well written, well-paced, and chock full of interesting characters. I was actually surprised to learn the why behind Maya's disappearance, and a surprise ending is always a good thing. I believe that this is the third book in the Brenna Spector series, but you don't need to read them in order as the author gives you all of the information you need. Well worth reading!

  1. sounds more like a curse than a blessing to me.

This sounds like a great read, Brenna a wonderful character who I think I'd empathise with.

    1. While I like the idea of remembering everything, I think you're right and it would be more of a curse than a blessing.
