BBNYC Day 12: How Do You Plan on Getting More Followers This Year?

Parajunkee is hosting a Book Blogger New Year's Challenge to start 2014 off on a good note! I may not be able to participate every day, but will do my best to visit everyone else!

Day 12: How Do You Plan on Getting More Followers This Year?

Honestly, I have no plan. If someone wants to follow me, I'll be thrilled and happy and honored! But I have no idea how to attract new followers.

I don't want to hold contests where you have to follow me in order to enter, because I don't like having to do that when I enter contests. Plus those aren't really followers IMO, just a contest entry. I know that some publishers are looking for bloggers with certain stats, but that feels dishonest to me. I have no problem with others doing this, but it's just not for me.

Guess I subscribe to the "If you build it, they will come" school of thought. Hopefully, if I keep blogging, my fellow bookaholics will eventually find me. :)

  1. Its always hard to get followers and I agree these give aways that feel they need to have people subscribe as a must just turns me off because you know other wise they won't follow you.

I think taking part in meme's, these kind of features etc where you have to leave your link could work. As well as commenting on blogs

    1. I'm going to concentrate on commenting this year, so hopefully that will encourage people to come back. I'd like to try a few discussion posts as I love the back and forth, but need to come up with some good topics.

  2. It's like owning a restaurant. It's better to get a couple people and keep them because they love your food than get a lot of people and lose them because they don't like your food. Quality over quantity.

    Great post! :)

    1. Excellent analogy! I agree an would rather have a few engaged followers than hundreds of people who never come back. :)

  3. Posting your best content on a regular basis is the best and only basis for having people following you - if, when they find your blog, you've only posted twice in the last 6 months, they're not going to stick around to find out when you'll post next.

The other thing is to let people know you exist. Twitter/facebook/G+ (what ever floats your boat) then also comment on other people's blogs. I woudnt have found you if you hadnt taken part in Parajunkee's challenge!

Good to see that you've got several different ways to follow on your left sidebar!

    1. Have to admit that I'm not very active on Twitter or Facebook, as they're giant timesucks for me. I have upped my blog commenting though, and am looking forward to more events like this one as it's a great way to discover new blogs!

Those are dreadful. Also, if I have to speak for myself, I tend to unfollow such blogs once the contest is over, because I usually find out that I don't really care for their content...Can I be the only one?

    1. No, you're definitely not the only one! I did that too when I first started out, then decided that the prize usually wasn't worth me following, then remembering to go back to unfollow. :(

  5. I agree about the followers because of giveaways. These do not seem honest because the person may have never seen the blog before the giveaway and is only entering for a chance to win. I would rather have people who genuinely like my blog follow.

    1. Me too April! Hopefully, people choose to follow me because they like the content. :)

    1. Thanks Becky! I went through an anxious phase when I worried about my numbers, but hopefully I'm over that now. :)

  7. I totally agree. I don't want to buy my followers. People will either like my blog or they won't. I have had 3 giveaways on my blog but two were promotional items given to me that went with my groups on goodreads and one went with my Oz month. I did see a huge difference in followers but if they ever came back or not who knows??

    1. That's a good way to look at it! I don't want to buy followers either, especially if they never come back. Have been tossing around a few ideas on how to reward my readers, but haven't come up with anything solid that would avoid a non-reader swooping in to win the giveaway.

  8. These are my thoughts exactly. If people like your content and want more, they will follow. If they don't they won't. There's not really anything you can do to get more dedicated readers

    1. That's what I eventually realized. Like they say - if you build it, they will come! :)

  9. I agree. Write good stuff. I don't get a lot of books from publishers, (mostly because I don't ask) but I get plenty from Edelweiss and NetGalley so I don't have to beg. I'm plenty busy reading. Good luck and thanks for visiting (again!)

    1. I don't get very many books directly from the publishers, so thank goodness for NetGalley! Although I do have a tendency to ask for too many sometimes, so need to work on my self-control. *L*

  10. I'm not worried so much about followers and all that; I just love seeing people comment. So I always comment back when someone leaves me a comment to start a fun bloggy relationship. :)
