BBNYC Day 11: TBR Shelf: How Many?

Parajunkee is hosting a Book Blogger New Year's Challenge to start 2014 off on a good note! I may not be able to participate every day, but will do my best to visit everyone else!

Day 11: TBR Shelf: How Many?

This is really embarrassing, but I have no idea how many books are in my TBR piles. I was going to just take pictures of the books, but then I realized that they're spread out over 4-5 different bookcases and that was even more embarrassing!

After a certain point, I stopped counting. I think that part of me is afraid that I'll be traumatized by the actual number of books I own but haven't read, so maybe what I don't know won't hurt me.

Please tell me that I'm not the only one who honestly doesn't know how many books are in her TBR piles!

  1. I didn't plan on being able to count my books- like you mine were spread out all over the house. But I've been culling my shelves the past 6 months or so in order to make room for all my books, so I stayed up late the other night and put all my tbr books in one place- and it took up almost two entire bookcases! Eek! And that was after taking 93+ books off my shelves last week.

Then I counted my Kindle and audiobooks, which was fine, but it's hard to get a perfectly accurate Kindle account since there's some that I'm not sure if I read or not and I was not going to take the time to cross check with Goodreads.

But before then, I had been totally willing to guesstimate- but I probably would have been way off! I really didn't think I had as many as I do have in physical books, and I thought I had way more in Kindle books. lol

    1. I forgot about my nook books! When I first got my nook, I went a little crazy with the free downloads so who knows how many are waiting for me? Double yikes!

    1. Glad I'm not the only one refusing to count her books! I really need to arrange my books so they're not scattered around so many different bookcases.

  4. What you don't know won't hurt you! ;)

I counted my print books but I will not even go there with my ebooks!

    1. Couldn't agree more! Think I need one of those signs that say "Enter at your own risk" or "Abandon all hope ye who enter!" *L*

  5. At this very moment, I do have 7 books around the house waiting for me to read them (my latest purchases), but I don't count them as TBR. Because I will go through them quickly enough to find myself staring at my Goodreads shelves with longing. And there are 64 TBR books on them, along with 47 NS (Not-Sure) ones. At this stage, I have to buy all my books (I only got 3 PDFs for review purposes), and I'm on a strict budget...so I have to trim :(.

    1. That's not too bad! I'd say about half of my books are from books I've bought over the years, but never got around to reading. And about 90% of my ebooks are free downloads, so I need to start reading those too. I've been on a No-Buy for awhile now, but keep falling off the wagon! *L*

  6. That's the tough thing about eReaders. I love always having a book with me, but I've found that if I can't see the book, I don't read it. If I don't start reading it immediately after buying it or checking it out from the library, it doesn't get read!

    1. You're right! Even if the books are right in front of me, I tend to forget about them so ebooks don't stand a chance! Think I need to write them down somewhere so there's a physical reminder for me somewhere.

  7. I didn't know until last night. It was a VERY tramatizing number. And worse, I bought more books today. Ahhhh....it will never end!

    1. Unless there's an actual worldwide book shortage, I don't think we'll ever get to the bottom of our TBR piles! *L*

    2. Lol, I think if there's a book shortage, we booklovers are going to be protecting our babies by any means necessary.

    3. Hmmmm....think I might need to build a secret room to keep them safe! Better safe than sorry, right? lol

  8. You definitely aren't alone in not knowing the exact number. My books are all over because I'm horrible at organization.

    1. I keep meaning to organize them one day, but "one day" never seems to come. It's strange because I have to have them alphabetized, but each bookcase is alphabetized by itself instead of in one big collection. My OCD tendencies have no rhyme nor reason. *shrugs*

  9. you are not the only one. I have various spots for my books, including like three actual bookcases, and almost all of them have books I have yet to read! It's a bit sad, but that's why I try and read things from my own collection as much as I can.

    1. I like to think that I started out organized, as I had a bookcase for paperbacks and another for BEA books, then it got a little out of hand. Think I need to pull them all off the shelves and start over, but that's a huge project and more than a little scary! Think I'll stick with disorganized for now! *L*

  10. I didn't want to count either. I just went for those books I have added to my goodread TBR list. But I too have tons of freebies downloaded to my Kindle, and I don't dare to know how many they are. I just figured I'll get to them when I get to them.

    1. I keep forgetting about my nook books, which is a shame because I know that there are quite a few good ones sitting there just waiting to be read! Really need to do something about my poor, forgotten ebooks!

  11. I am also scared to count. But I can take a photo of mine because I have a little bookshelf for books i haven't read (if they were scattered among my other books I'd have no idea what I'd read or not...)

  12. Oh please! How would I know how many books I have in my TBR pile. I have books on my bookshelf and then in the closet...in drawers...I have tried to contain them all in the guestroom though.

  13. I'm thinking it may be best NOT to know. There's always gonna be a pile, right? So, just read and enjoy it. Ignore this horrible question!

    1. Ignorance IS bliss, otherwise I would be too traumatized to even try to whittle the piles down! I agree, we should all ignore this horrible question! Oops...too late! *L*

  14. I'm right there with you! I have a ton of tbr books piled up at the top of my closet. My goal is to read them all this year *crosses fingers*

    1. I'd like to get at least some of the pile read this year, but I know that there's no way I'll read them all. I simply can't resist the bright & the shiny & the new!

  15. Confession ... Before our move this last summer, I tracked all of my physical books, so I have a pretty good idea about my physical pile of books (though I'm not going to mention numbers). With another move this summer, I thought this would be easier to ensure I don't end up duplicating books!

    1. I started keeping track years ago after buying the same book more than once. In my defense, they both had different covers, but still annoying! What's sad is that I got rid of so many books before our move, but still wound up with almost 100 book boxes. Yikes!
